Meet The Founder & Executive Director
Marlana Kendricks is a dedicated advocate for families in the special needs community and the founder of Special Creations. After her son O’syah was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder in 2016, Marlana faced numerous challenges, including financial, educational, and community barriers in raising him. Driven by her personal experiences, she established Special Creations to bridge the gaps that many families encounter. Her mission is to provide essential financial services, programs, camps, and daycare options that specifically cater to the needs of families caring for special needs children. Marlana’s passion lies in serving this community, as she strives to be the support she wished she had while navigating the complexities of the special needs journey. Through her work, she finds joy and purpose in helping others thrive.

Meet The Purpose

O’syah is a bright and energetic 10 year old. He was diagnosed with STXBP1 Genetic Disorder 2 1/2 years after he was born. Despite the challenges of being completely nonverbal, O’syah has defied all expectations and continues to thrive. His remarkable journey includes overcoming the odds doctors initially doubted he would ever walk or run, yet today he is an active runner! O’syah is full of life, known for his infectious smile and hypoactive spirit, bringing joy to everyone around him. His determination and strength inspire all who have the privilege to know him.
The Why
Prevalence of Special Needs | According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 6 children in the United States aged 3 to 17 years has a developmental disability, which can include conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disabilities. |
Financial Challenges | The average cost of raising a child with special needs is significantly higher than that of a typically developing child. Families may spend between $20,000 to $60,000 more annually on medical care, therapies, educational support, and caregiving. – A survey from the National Autism Society found that approximately 42% of families reported financial strain due to the costs associated with raising a child with autism. |
Employment Impact | Many parents of children with special needs experience employment challenges. A survey from the Autism Society indicated that about 66% of parents have had to reduce work hours or leave their jobs due to their child’s care needs. |
Mental Health | Caregivers, often parents, face higher rates of stress, anxiety, and depression. Studies show that parents of children with special needs are nearly twice as likely to experience depression compared to parents of typically developing children. |
Educational Barriers | According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, more than 75% of parents of children with learning disabilities feel their schools do not provide enough resources to meet their child’s educational needs. |
